Arthur Hills designed the Willoughby course with four sets of tees to make sure both men and women golfers are suitably challenged, but never faced with the sense of either hopelessness or monotony you find in less imaginative Florida layouts. From the championship tees used in US Open qualifiers, the course plays to 6,731 yards between towering trees and natural wetlands, over unfriendly lakes and around more than 55 all too inviting bunkers. In keeping with the Arthur Hills tradition, Willoughby is carved out of the natural surroundings and makes abundant use of all available flora, hillocks and swales to create the most picturesque golf course in the area. The resultant varied terrain ensures that shot selection at Willoughby never seems repetitive and with each day’s round the sense of challenge and fascination is renewed.
A major renovation was recently completed creating a six acre, world-class practice facility including a distance programmed driving range, putting and chipping areas and a special wedge and sand iron area for short game refinement. The course proper has also been refreshed with additional fairway bunkers, visually attractive berms, newly formed bulkheads and floral landscaping. The result: a course more pleasing to the eye, more enjoyable to the player and just what you’d like in your home course.
